Why Scale Forms in the First Place
Tap water contains dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, collectively measured as "water hardness." When water heats inside a boiler, some of those minerals fall out of solution and bond to internal surfaces as solid limescale, the same white, chalky deposit you'd see build up in an electric kettle. Softer water forms scale more slowly; harder water, common across much of the U.S. Midwest and Southwest, can visibly affect a daily-use machine within just a couple of months. Filtered water reduces mineral content and slows the process, but doesn't stop it entirely. Even bottled water contains some dissolved minerals.
How to Know It's Time

The Descaling Process, Step by Step
- Empty and rinse the water tank. Remove any water filter cartridge first. Descaling solution will damage most charcoal filters.
- Mix the descaling solution according to the product's instructions and fill the tank. Most solutions use a specific water-to-solution ratio; don't eyeball it.
- Run the solution through the group head in short bursts rather than one continuous pull, giving it time to sit in the boiler between cycles. If your machine has a dedicated descale program, use it. It's timed for exactly this.
- Run the solution through the steam wand as well, since scale builds up there independently of the brew boiler.
- Empty and thoroughly rinse the tank, then refill with clean water.
- Run at least three to four full tanks of clean water through both the group head and steam wand before making a drinkable shot. Descaling solution residue is the most common cause of a "soapy" first shot after maintenance. Most complaints trace back to under-rinsing, not the solution itself.

If you're on well water or a municipal supply known for hardness, descale on a fixed calendar reminder rather than waiting for symptoms, since by the time flow rate visibly drops, scale has often already affected temperature stability for weeks. Common Questions
Can I just use vinegar instead?
You can, but we don't recommend it. Vinegar is more acidic than purpose-built descaling solutions, and its smell is notoriously difficult to fully rinse out of internal lines. It's common to taste it in shots for days afterward. A dedicated descaler costs about as much as a coffee drink and avoids the problem entirely.
Will descaling void my warranty?
No. Regular descaling is expected maintenance, and most manufacturers, including Breville, explicitly document it in the user manual. What can void a warranty is scale damage caused by never descaling at all, which is a much stronger reason to stay on schedule.
My machine has no descale indicator: How do I track this manually?
Set a recurring reminder based on your water hardness and usage rather than relying on symptoms. A simple rule of thumb: every 60 days for hard water and daily use, every 90 to 120 days for moderate water or lighter use.
