Berlin's specialty coffee scene has genuine claim to being one of the most influential in Europe, built by a small number of roasters who arrived years before the rest of the continent caught up, and it's still adding new names with real competition pedigree. Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg and Neukölln each carry a distinct slice of that history.
The five picks below were chosen across nearly two decades of that history, from the city's earliest pioneer to a roastery that opened in 2024.
Best Overall: The Barn, Mitte
The Barn was founded in 2010 by Ralf Rüller, who returned to Berlin after years in London and felt the city lacked a coffee shop that matched his standard for honest, origin-focused specialty coffee. What began as a single cafe in Berlin's historic Scheunenviertel district, the neighborhood the shop takes its name from, expanded into roasting in 2012 and grew into a network of cafes across the city and beyond. In 2025, The Barn was named Roaster of the Year.
Signature drink: the single-origin filter, brewed from The Barn's own roasting program. What to order: ask which origin the team is currently featuring, since the roasting program's reputation is built on that rotating focus.
Best for Beans to Take Home: Bonanza Coffee Roasters, Kreuzberg
Bonanza was founded in 2006 by Kiduk Reus and Yumi Choi, opening their original location in Prenzlauer Berg years before Berlin's third wave hit the mainstream, making them one of the true pioneers of European specialty coffee. The Kreuzberg Roastery Café opened in 2017, with a Probat roaster visible through large glass windows so visitors can watch the process behind the beans. In 2025, Bonanza was named Best Independent Coffee Shop in Europe at the European Coffee & Hospitality Awards.
Signature drink: the house espresso, roasted on-site in Kreuzberg. What to order: a bag of the current single-origin roast to take home, since watching it roasted behind the glass makes the freshness tangible.
Baratza Encore ESP
A reliable dual-range burr grinder that handles both espresso and filter grinds from beans bought fresh at any of these shops, $199
Best Hidden Gem: Five Elephant, Multiple Locations
Five Elephant has been a Berlin fixture since 2010, known for two very different things in equal measure: genuinely serious direct-trade specialty coffee, and a New York-style cheesecake that's become just as much a reason to visit. With locations across Kreuzberg, Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg, the shop combines a minimalist coffee house sensibility with a bakery program most specialty roasters don't attempt at all.
Signature drink: the pour-over, brewed from Five Elephant's direct-trade sourcing. What to order: the pour-over alongside a slice of the cheesecake, since the pairing is genuinely part of the shop's identity.
“Berlin's coffee scene didn't grow up in a hurry. It's had nearly two decades to get this good, and the earliest names are still setting the pace.”
Best for Craft & Rising Star: Kolo Coffee, Berlin
Kolo launched in 2024, founded by Ukrainian roaster Vladyslav Demonenko, and quickly became one of the city's standout newer names, earning Best Specialty Coffee Shop at Berlin Coffee Week 2025. Demonenko brings real competition credentials to the bar, including World Vice Champion in Coffee in Good Spirits in 2022 and Ukrainian Brewers Cup champion in 2023. The name "kolo" means "circle" in Ukrainian, reflecting a stated mission to bring people together over coffee.
Signature drink: the house espresso, pulled by a founder with genuine world-competition credentials. What to order: ask what's currently on the competition-inspired specialty menu, since Demonenko's background shows up directly in the drink list.
Best for Working / Laptop-Friendly: Blumental, Kreuzberg
Blumental occupies a genuinely historic building at the green Engeldamm between Kreuzberg and Mitte, opened in 1900 as Germany's first trade union house before later serving as a hospital and the city's Institute of Tropical Diseases. Today it runs as a cafe, restaurant and event space with a dedicated coworking zone offering fast WiFi and plenty of power outlets, alongside a vegan-forward kitchen and a genuine zero-waste composting program.
Signature drink: the house filter coffee, served alongside Blumental's plant-based food menu. What to order: settle into the coworking zone with a filter coffee if you're staying for a while, since that space was built specifically for it.
Fellow Atmos Vacuum Canister
Keeps freshly roasted beans usable through their full freshness window, active vacuum-seal mechanism, $37
Map & Neighborhood Guide
Kreuzberg covers three of these five stops on its own: Bonanza, Blumental and one of Five Elephant's locations all sit close enough to pair into a single outing. The Barn's Mitte flagship is a short trip north from there. Kolo Coffee is worth its own dedicated visit given how recently it opened and how much of its identity is tied to a single space.
